Oromia, Amhara Parties reached interim agreement

Twelve political parties active in Amhara and Oromia Regional States, including Prosperity Party, have signed an interim agreement to work jointly on common political stances. The signing ceremony take place in Addis Ababa on 23 September 2020.

The parties came to the agreement following the national dialogue they have been holding over the last ten months focusing on various national issues. The national dialogue was initiated by the federal government in response to ethnic violence that erupted in November 2019 at universities in Amhara and Oromia regions.

The parties which took part on the discussion are All Amhara People’s Organization; All Amhara People’s Party; Amhara Democratic Force Movement; Amhara Survival for Ethiopia’s Unity Organization; National Movement of Amhara; Netsebirake Amhara Dirijit; Oromo Federalist Congress; Oromo Liberation Front; Oromo Liberation Front- United; Oromia National Party; Prosperity Party -Amhara Branch; Prosperity Party -Oromia Branch.

According to the statement they issued, the parties have agreed on ten points including the continuation of an inclusive national dialogue, protection of security and rights of citizens living in the two regions, protection of individual and group rights, amendment of the constitution in an inclusive way, holding of reliable population census, among others.
